Get Over Your Ex With These 5 Breakup Anthems
These lyrics ruled our love lives at one point or another.
Other than good friends and a big pint of chocolate ice cream, nothing can help you get through a really rough breakup better than music. Really emotional and honest songs can make you feel like you want to scream or cry, but grieving the end of a relationship is healthy.
Some of the greatest breakup songs ever written—whether they're about cheating, moving on or just realizing the relationship doesn't work—all have one special thing in common. They all have the ability to make us feel like we're not alone in the world, like someone else out there understands. And that can be a powerful thing for the moving on process.
Here are five breakup songs that helped us at one time or another (along with our favorite lyrics):
1. "Cry Me A River" (Justin Timberlake)
This is a no-brainer. JT famously released this after his very public split from Britney Spears back in 2002 when she reportedly cheated on him, and the song still has so much resonance today. Recently, Justin Bieber performed an impromptu acoustic version in concert after he and longtime girlfriend Selena Gomez called it quits.
You told me you loved me. Why did you leave me, all alone? Now you tell me you need me, when you call me, on the phone. Girl I refuse, you must have me confused with some other guy. Your bridges were burned, and now it's your turn to cry. Cry me a river.
2. "You Oughta Know" (Alanis Morissette)
You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't belt this song out at the top of their lungs at some point. Alanis' raw emotion is felt so strongly as she tells the tale of a scorned lover. Rumor has it, she wrote the song about her ex—Full House's Uncle Joey (AKA Dave Coulier), but either way, everyone can relate to it.
The love that you gave that we made wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no. And every time you speak her name, does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you died, till you died? But you're still alive. And I'm here to remind you of the mess you left when you went away. It's not fair to deny me of the cross I bear that you gave to me. You, you, you oughta know.
