About Vanessa Garcia
I'm a multidisciplinary artist working as a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and journalist. My debut novel, White Light, was published in 2015, to critical acclaim. Named one of the Best Books of 2015 by NPR, it also won an International Latino Book Award. My plays have been produced around the world from Los Angeles to Edinburgh and Amsterdam; New York City to Miami. These include the 2019 immersive hit, The Amparo Experience --“Miami’s Hottest Ticket,” according to People en Español, and winner of the Ruth Foreman Award for significant contribution to the development of theatre. As a journalist, feature writer, and essayist, my pieces have appeared in The LA Times, The Miami Herald, ESPN, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, Narrative.ly, and American Theatre Magazine, among numerous other publications. I hold a PhD from the University of California Irvine in English (with a focus in Creative Nonfiction), an MFA from the University of Miami (in fiction), and a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University (English and Art History). My specialties include Cuba, all things Cuban-American as well as children's media -- I've written for Sesame Street and Caillou, among other kids shows. I live in Miami (and the world) with my husband and two children.
