How Did Max Azria Die? New Details On The Death Of Legendary Designer At 70
His death rocked the fashion world.
Max Azria passed away on Monday May 6th. The fashion icon known for his company BCBGMAXAZRIA was 70 years old. BCBG stood for the french epithet, "good style, good attitude." Many say that he embodied that idea until the day he died, striving to create fashion and an attitude that went along with it.
1. He had an early life as a fashion visionary
Max Azria immigrated to the U.S from Tunisia, and built his empire from the ground up. His wife, Lubov Azria, attested to his work ethic and creative ability saying: “When Max started BCBG in 1989 and I joined him in 1992, there was no contemporary market; he basically invented it based on the price point and type of clothes.” His ability to create and design, alongside his talent allowed him to grow his company to be a major fashion contender.
2. Azria's career is astounding
The designer participated in his first runway show in 1996, and has worked with many well known celebrities. His clients include Kim Kardashian, Drew Barrymore, Fergie, Angelina Jolie and so many more. He even teamed up with Miley Cyrus for her 2009 World Wonder Tour. He created BCBGMAXAZRIA 30 years ago, and has since worked with a variety of people producing high quality fashion.
3. He ended up leaving the business that bears his name in 2016
Azria left the company in 2016, just before they filed for bankruptcy in 2017. The financial struggles of the company made him want to leave, and they were bought out by Marquee Brands. Since then, the company has made a prosperous recovery, once again representing a major brand and fashion tier. Just this year, the company celebrated it's 30th birthday, and Lubov still serves as a creative director. The company released an emotional post on Tuesday, confirming his passing and paying homage to the man who started it all. The statement said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Max Azria. Max was a true visionary, who defined the Contemporary Fashion category. BCBG stands for Bon Chic, Bon Genre or “good style, good attitude," which reflects the legacy of the man himself, one we are committed to preserving in his honor. Our deepest condolences to the Azria family."
4. He was struggling with lung cancer
Azria lost his battle with lung cancer in a Houston hospital at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife Lubov, and six kids. One of his daughters, Joyce, actually took on the challenge of creating a younger fashion line in the company, BCBGenerations.
