A man who was convicted of trying to eat a young girl in 2014 has moved to the United States.

Dale Bolinger, who was nicknamed the Canterbury Cannibal, was in the Washington County Jail Monday but police said he has not been charged with any crime, according to AJC.

"He's here, but I cannot tell you why," Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson said. "Legally, I cannot say anything."

The residents of Blair, Nebraska, were reportedly upset when they learned a cannibal was in the community.

Bolinger, 62, was arrested in Canterbury, England, for trying to meet up with a teenage girl he met online with plans to kill and eat her. He had purchased an ax the day prior to the meeting, which the girl failed to show up to.

Bolinger described how he wanted to behead and eat the teenager after having sex with her.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison for attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, and possession and distribution of indecent materials. He also pleaded guilty to 10 other charges, including administering a poison or noxious substance and seven counts of publishing an obscene article.

When he was arrested he told police he was “interested in children as food” and admitted to having cannibalistic thoughts since he was six years old, a report by BBC said.

At his trial in 2014, Judge Adele Williams described Bolinger’s behavior as "abhorrent, shocking and dangerous," but local law enforcement in Blair says the public need not be afraid of him.

"We want to inform the citizens of Washington County that law enforcement and the county attorney's office know the location of Mr. Bolinger and you can rest assured that he not a threat to the community at this time,” Washington County Attorney Scott Vander Schaaf said in a statement.

It is unclear why he was released from prison so early but he is currently being held in the Washington jail without bond. No charges are listed on the online jail records, which could mean he is being held on a mental health warrant, but the reason is yet to be confirmed by police.

Psychiatrists ruled out mental illness when he was arrested, according to BBC.

When Bolinger moved to Blair earlier this month he registered himself as a sex offender, as legally required. He has three children.

Robinson told The Omaha World-Herald he has received several phone calls from concerned neighbors.

“It’s making my heart race,” Sylvia Kasper, who lives in the same neighborhood as Bolinger, told KMTV. “It’s scary considering I have a small daycare, and now I really have to watch and keep doors locked.”

Bolinger is legally allowed to stay because he registered as a sex offender.

“We’re just as frustrated as everybody else,” Robinson said.
