Friends allow time for a relationship to develop. You may click with them instantly, but they don’t try to rush things. A frenemy wants to be close immediately.
A friend will share things about their life and ask you things about yours, but they don’t expect to know everything about you in the first five minutes after meeting you. Frenemies want to know your deepest and darkest thoughts, not because they care but so they have some ammunition to use against you later.
Frenemies look for your weaknesses and use them as a way to control you. When you’re feeling confident and good, a frenemy will bring up those things that have hurt you in the past and that always sting.
Friends may tease you in a kind way, but frenemies are all about the burn and making fun of you so that they appear to be better than you. Frenemies have no problem throwing their friends under the bus if it suits their purposes.
The only way a frenemy has your back is to put a knife in it.
When a friend compliments you, it’s direct, sincere, and made to make you feel good. A frenemy is well-versed in the art of backhanded compliments, designed to put you down. If a frenemy praises you, it’s calculating and intended to lull you into a place of complacency. Frenemies are very competitive, and their goal is not to allow you to succeed; they think your success takes away from theirs.
Whereas friends have qualities such as trustworthiness, compassion, empathy, and kindness, a frenemy feels jealousy, resentment, and sometimes vengeance. Luckily, astrology can tell us all about the zodiac signs who are frenemies and who you should look out for.
1. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Geminis make some of the best friends... and some of the biggest frenemies. Since they're the sign of the twins, they can be two-faced. Sometimes they're building their friends up and other times they're knocking them down.
They can be unintentionally mean when they forget that they were supposed to pick you up to take you to the airport, or when they share something about you that they were forbidden to tell. If you're talking to a Gemini at a party, they may leave you in the dust if they think there's someone more interesting to talk to.
2. LEO (July 23 - August 22)
A Leo can be a fantastic friend as long as you consistently compliment them and give them attention. However, if you try to hog their spotlight or undermine them in any way, they'll turn from a friend to a frenemy.
When a Leo is a frenemy, you'll feel as if you're slowly getting pushed out of the frame and your accomplishments, achievements, and victories will seem to get smaller and smaller until they barely exist. Leos always have followers and they can easily get those followers to turn against you.
3. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
In some ways, Sagittarius is a frenemy so she doesn't get too close and can cut ties easily if the relationship stops being fun. Her frenemy status shows itself in her sometimes cutting remarks.
She says she's just being funny when she makes a joke at your expense but that doesn't mean it hurts any less. Her criticism is harsh and usually unrequested. She says she's only trying to help but her helping hurts.
4. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
Scorpios make very loyal and intense friends who would sacrifice their own happiness for a friend. However, if a Scorpio thinks that you've betrayed them or lied to them, it won't be friendship on their mind but revenge.
It can't be said enough — "Never piss off a Scorpio" — because they'll make it their mission to make you pay. Scorpios are scary and dangerous frenemies, so don't assume their anger will blow over; it will always be there.
5. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
I'd love to be able to say that Libras are never frenemies, but I can't. They'll seemingly take in all kinds of slights and wrongdoings making the perpetrators think that Libras are too chill to get upset. However, Libras will only take so much before they fight back.
Since they hate confrontation, their method of fighting back tends to be very passive-aggressive. You think everything is cool with your Libra friend and you, but they're seething on the inside. On a positive note, Libras don't hang on to negativity or animosity very long, so it's possible to get back into their good graces and have them be a friend again.
6. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
Aquarians aren't always the most compassionate of individuals, so they may not even be aware that their overly sarcastic sense of humor hurts sometimes and that no one enjoys it when Aquarius makes them out to be an idiot.
They may not get why you got angry when they told a group something about you that you preferred to keep quiet. They don't intend to be mean, they just don't have the empathy gene.
7. ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
If an Aries is a frenemy, they're probably completely unaware that they are. They blurt out harsh things all the time and being overly competitive is their second nature — they're not doing them to hurt you, it's just how they are.
They're impulsive and do things without thinking, which, unfortunately, can cause fallout on other people. They don't mean to be frenemies, it just seems to happen spontaneously.
8. CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
A Cancer frenemy will lash out when hurt. Cancers want to love and be loved, but if they think you're getting in the way of their love or if they think you're deliberately trying to block it, they'll go after you.
They probably already know what buttons to push and what to do to cause the most damage (all those times they've comforted you). Don't think that kind and loving Cancer doesn't have it in them to be a frenemy — they do, especially when provoked.
9. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
In order to validate their reasons for being a frenemy, Taurus will convince themselves that they aren't being mean, they're only trying to teach you a lesson.
Taureans are like those drivers who, when cut off by another driver, will get in front of them and slow way down. They take it upon themselves to teach us all how to be better people, even though no one has asked, nor do the lessons actually teach anybody.
10. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
Capricorns make very bad frenemies as frenemies are everything they despise — shallow, fake, shady, self-serving, and mean. If a Capricorn is a frenemy (and it's rare) it will be calculated to cause the most damaged. They'll make a plan to take down their friend, it will be cold-blooded and ruthless.
11. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
Virgos don't do the frenemy thing very well. They can be hypercritical and sometimes that hypercriticism can feel as if you're being picked on or targeted.
If that happens, it's not because Virgo is deliberately trying to be mean, they just forget that it isn't their place to put their sky-high standards on other people, especially if other people don't want them.
12. PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
Pisces are terrible frenemies because it hurts them if they hurt other people. They want to do what they can to help their friends and loved ones, not sabotage them.
The person they are most likely to be a frenemy towards is themselves as they can be insecure, full of self-doubt, and are very critical. They don't need anyone else to emotionally beat them up because they can do it themselves.
