3 More Stories About Kevin Spacey Assaulting And Harassing Young Men Surface Amid Claims The Actor Sexual Assaulted A 14-Year-Old Boy
Kevin Spacey has since come out as gay and claims he does not remember the alleged assault.
Buzzfeed Last night, Buzzfeed reported allegations that actor Kevin Spacey made a sexual advance towards actor Anthony Rapp when Rapp was just 14 years old.
According to Rapp, he and Spacey became friends in 1986 after they both performed on Broadway shows and met during one of the customary late-night after-show parties that sometimes Rapp's mom would let him attend by himself. Spacey was 26 at the time.
One night while hanging with a 17-year-old friend, Rapp ran into Spacey who invited the underaged kids to a nightclub.
“I looked younger than 14,” Rapp said. "I don't know how — we got in through the front door. We didn't have to show ID. And we sat with him in some VIP area."
Rapp said Spacey didn't offer him any alcohol but did invite him to attend a party at his apartment he was having later in the week.
The "Adventures in Babysitting" star went and quickly realized he was the only one there who was not an adult.
"I imagine that I might be opening my poor late mother up to some criticisms for how she parented, but, you know, it was a different era," he said. "I went to work by myself. I would walk to the subway, and go to the theater by myself.”
Rather than mingle with the adults, Rapp said he went to Spacey's bedroom, sat on the edge of the bed and ended up watching TV well past midnight. Then at some point, Spacey was standing in the doorway, looking pretty drunk. Everyone else had left the party.
“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold," Rapp said. "But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me.”
Rapp said while laying on top of him, Spacey pressed into him and tightened his arms. He doesn't remember how long he was in that position but said he was able to squirm away after a short period.
“He was trying to seduce me,” he said. “I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
Rapp said he then went to the bathroom and closed the door. After a short time, he came out of the bathroom and went to the front door to leave.
"As I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, 'Are you sure you wanna go?' I said, 'Yes, good night,' and then I did leave."
"The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn't happen," Rapp said. "And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can't believe it. I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy."
Rapp said though he considered reaching out to Spacey after the fact, he never did. And he never told his mother about it either. She died of cancer in 1997.
After Spacey's career took off and he couldn't avoid seeing his face (and the accompanying feelings of panic that came with it), he eventually told a few people he was close to. Buzzfeed was able to confirm those stories.
He even told the Advocate in an interview in 2001 about the incident, leaving out Spacey's name, and met with a lawyer who told him there was no case worth pursuing.
Spacey has since issued an apology via Twitter. It reads as follows:
"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I'm beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years."
He also took the opportunity to come out as gay. His sexuality has been of public speculation for many years.
"This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior."
While most of those stories were just about men he was spotted getting close to, some were a little more sinister than that. Defamer posted stories from people who claimed to have evidence that Spacey was gay.
One story about a man who had a creepy encounter with the actor in a sauna is particularly damning.
After a few minutes, he starts rubbing his crotch through his towel," he said. "He wasn't blatant about it, but it was easy to tell what he was doing. After he got his pup tent up, he started stretching his legs. This meant he "accidentally" rubbed against my legs a couple of times, then apologized."
"I waved it off the first time, then grimace-smiled the next time as I'd pretty much had enough. The third and final time he decided to brush his leg against mine and then just leave it there. I looked over at him. He had his eyes closed but was rubbing his crotch again. I got up and left at that point."
Another person claimed that their friend's uncle works for "House of Cards," and said Spacey regularly solicits young male crew members for sex in his trailer. Citing specifically that Spacey "demands" it.
Journalist Heather Unruh tweeted on Oct. 13 that someone she knew was assaulted by Spacey.
"The #weinsteinscandal has emboldened me-- #truth time. I was a Kevin Spacey fan until he assaulted a loved one. Time the dominoes fell," she wrote.
She's not revealing who that friend is until they are ready to go public.
