5 Reason Books Are INFINITELY Better Than Any Boyfriend
For starters, books don't forget to take out the trash.
It's a fabulous feeling when you've started a book and you realize it's a good one. Books give us so much and yet ask so little of us.
I've always loved books and I love them in all their various forms. While I can enjoy reading something on my Kindle or tablet, it's not the same as having a bound, hard copy in my hand. I feel guilty when I read something electronically, as if I'm cheating on someone.
As long as I'm confessing, I love books so much that going to the library makes me happy, and buying a book at a rare brick and mortar bookstore gives me a thrill. I still get books on Amazon and wish I didn't, but sometimes I can't wait.
I'm not reading as much as I used to and that makes me feel sad, like a part of me is gone forever. I identify as a book lover and a reader, so it's no surprise that sometimes I find that books can be just as good, if not better, than a relationship.
Here are six ways in which books are better than almost anyone.
1. You aren't committed to having just one.
If you told your partner that you want to see a whole stack-load of people and you didn't have the kind of relationship where that was OK, they probably wouldn't take it too well. And not just them — your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers would all think you were a bit of a ho-bag.
But do you know how you look with a whole bunch of books? You look smart, educated, and kind of a badass. If your boyfriend is bugging or boring you, you can't just set him down and pick up a new dude, but you can do exactly that with a book.
2. Your book may end, but your breakup can take forever.
Breakups can be messy, uncomfortable, and often times require so much change and decision. There can be legal ramifications, a division of property, and just all-around sh*ttiness. The ending of a relationship can take a really long time, but when you finish the last page, it's done.
Sure, the story might end on a question or a cliffhanger and there might be a series of books that come after, but the book itself ends cleanly and distinctively. It's done and you know it. There's no such thing as being someone's rebound book.
3. You can find instant solace in books. Men? Not so much.
If you've had a bad day and need some comforting, your partner might not be available for you. Books are always there waiting to delight and distract you. They don't make plans with the boys when you need something to make you feel better; they're waiting to help you lose yourself in their story.
4. You don't need to put much effort into reading books.
Relationships are complicated and even the strong ones take work. Books, on the other hand, are easy. And while you may shout out that the main character is being an idiot, books don't require that much effort on your part.
5. Let's face it: They're great in bed.
They're always there ready and waiting for you. If you want something erotic or historical, humorous or mysterious, a book can be whatever you want. They can help you sleep, and if you do fall asleep while reading one, they don't get pissed off at you. Sometimes books can keep you up all night, but that's OK because at the end you'll be completely satisfied.
I treasure how books make me feel. No matter where I am or how old I get, I know I can still be deliriously happy curled up with a good book.
