35 Best Marina Song Lyrics & Heartbreaking Quotes About Weakness In Love
Welcome to the life of Marina Diamandis - Formerly Marina and the Diamonds.
Are you a heartbreaker, prima donna girl, or Electra Heart? Maybe you're all three and relate to every Marina Era, like me. Marina Diamandis, formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, is a Welsh pop singer-songwriter that is one of the best vocalists and lyricists of our time.
Most people assume ‘the Diamonds’ in ‘Marina and the Diamonds’ refers to her being a band, however ‘the Diamonds’ mean her fans.
Marina began writing songs when she was 18 years old, but was too scared to sing them publicly. She became obsessed with becoming a singer, although she did not have a lot of musical experience. So, she taught herself how to play the piano and how to compose and produce music. Four years later, in 2007, she independently released her first EP “Mermaid vs. Sailor” on Myspace, which she created using the program GarageBand.
A year later, Neon Gold Records discovered her and booked her to open for Gotye.
In 2009, Marina released her first single “Obsessions” and first extended EP The Crown Jewels with Neon Gold Records. She then began performing at festivals, like the Glastonbury festival, the Reading and Leeds festival, and the iTunes Festival. Diamandis then released an EP consisting of the live songs she performed at the iTunes Festival. In December of 2009, Marina got second place on the Sound of 2010 poll by BBC and, at the 2010 BRIT awards, she was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award.
Marina released her first studio album, The Family Jewels, on February 15, 2010 and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry. In March of that year, she released her album in the U.S. In October, she received an award at the MTV Europe Music Awards for Best UK & Ireland Act. She then went on tour to promote her album and soon after, in 2011, Marina opened for Katy Perry on tour.
After Marina went through a breakup that left her sad and broken hearted, she released her concept album, Electra Heart in 2012. The album revolves around a character going through a break-up, Electra Heart, and four archetypes (Beauty Queen, Idle Teen, House Wife, Homewrecker).
Marina wanted to get her anger out by creating a cold and cynical character that ends up becoming a heartbreaker, but is clearly broken inside. Having been influenced by the dark and depressing side of Hollywood stardom in the ‘30s and ‘40s, Marina brought the character of Electra Heart to life by dying her hair blonde, performing with a heart drawn on her cheek, and dressed in old Hollywood-inspired outfits. Along with the album, Marina released music videos telling the story of Electra Heart, meant to be watched in order from part 1 to 11. Electra Heart became Marina’s first album to top the charts in the United Kingdom.
In 2015, Marina released her album Froot. This album was number 8 on the Billboard 200 list. That summer, she performed at Coachella and Lollapalooza, and then embarked on her Neon Nature Tour. In April 2016, Marina announced that she would be taking a break from music. On her break, Marina decided to take psychology classes at a University, spend time traveling in Japan, and get two kittens.
After her break, in 2018 Marina announced that she would be dropping “and the Diamonds” and will start making music as just “MARINA.” In 2019, she released her latest album consisting of two parts, Love + Fear.
