The word 'trust' is mentioned nearly 200 times in the entire Bible.
But, what is trust? A quick Google search online generates a top answer on the meaning of trust via Lexico from the Oxford Dictionary, and defines trust as 'the firm reliability and belief in someone or something'.
Wow. I don't know about you but there's always a small part of me that struggles with doubt when it comes to God.
The truth is that my heart believes but my mind sometimes looks at how impossible the future seems. Then, in fear, the avalanche of doubt crowds my faith.
Why is trusting in God so hard when we practice trusting the unknown each and every day? When you get into a car and ride to work or school on the highway, you trust that the other vehicles have drivers who fully intend to stay in their lane.
We trust that our mail carriers will drop off exactly what was received in our name to our home address.
We trust that tomorrow the Sun will rise again; however how amazing it is that our daily lives are filled with examples of trust and when it comes to love, after a disappointment or two (or three) the walls around our hearts go up. It's so hard to let them drop back down.

Humans fail themselves, and they also fail one another. Trust is like a two-edged sword where fulfilled it makes you feel wonderful, but when broken, the guards go up and around the heart.
Disappointment after disappointment over the years can create a giant fortress that is nearly impossible to break that blindly trusting God at times can feel impossible to do.
Even people who walked with God struggled with taking Him fully at his word. Case in point, Eve of the Bible. She has a face-to-face relationship with God. One twist of the truth by the Devil and she's sinning by eating a fruit that was forbidden off of a tree.
Her mind and heart didn't align. Her mind questions and doubted what her heart was told to believe as truth. She felt that she might miss out on something else, and so she literally took matters into her own hands and followed her own judgment.
The rest of the story doesn't need to be told. It's well-known as Biblical history.
Even when Jesus walked the Earth, there were trust issues despite the many miracles he performed. The apostles struggled with blind faith and trust as well, abandoning him in the garden before his death.
Trusting sounds so simple in theory, but in application it is hard, let's all admit, to trust with our whole heart as the Bible says we ought to do.
Perhaps it's because broken trust is so painful. If you've ever had yours broken, you know that nothing hurts worse than lost trust, especially when someone you once loved ... or still love, perhaps. Even the smallest acts of broken trust can make it easy to give up on the concept completely.
The mind wants to stop you from feeling pain. So, when it takes in all the information about the job you want, the marriage you hope to save, or the dreams you have for the future... and calculates putting trust blindly into a supreme being that you have never seen, it stops you from being hurt because the facts don't add up.
But, the heart knows. In fact, the heart is willing to love without needing to know what the future will bring.
Perhaps that's why Proverbs 3:5-6 states to 'trust with your whole heart' and not your whole mind. There are always forces at work beyond what the mind can comprehend because thinking is linear and based upon past experience.
In fact, trust and the mind conflict with one another, according to the Bible. The heart, on the other hand, is part of the spirit. It's dynamic and intuitive. It bases its judgment on the unknown and the unexplainable. The heart perceives the miracle before it manifests.
Trust is an act of wisdom and trusting in God, a form of partnership. Here are three things that the Bible says about trust.
1. Trust is a partnership between you and God.
Another Bible verse in Proverbs states that 'He who trusts in himself is a fool, but a person who walks in wisdom is kept safe.'
Faith and trust won't always mean that bad things won't happen, but it does mean good can come from evil.
According to Proverbs 3:5-6 'to trust God means that he will direct your path' because through trust in your heart you can hear his voice, and also your own.

2. Trust means learning your heart's desires.
We are all born with an inside voice but life has a way of drowning out the whisper. It's why so many of us feel lost for a good chunk of our lives. It takes time to tune into your heart, and spending time in quiet prayer and meditation can help you tune back in.
Bible verse Psalms 37:4 says that if you 'Delight yourself in God, He will give you the desires of your heart." This doesn't mean that you will get everything you want, but what it does mean is that you will learn what is it that you didn't realize before.
You will become aware of what those desires are that match up with your unique design.
3. Trust leads to protection.
The Bible talks a lot about God's protection when following your heart. Psalms 28:7 states "The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song, I give thanks to him."
Perhaps, like me, there have been times when you wanted to do something but felt led in a new direction. Sometimes it takes years to realize you were being protected. For me, when I've stubbornly ignored my inner voice, it can take years to realize how wasteful that decision was.
The good news is that trust is a process and you can practice letting go of your worries, cares, and concerns along the way.
No one is perfect, and it's like a surprise to God that you aren't. He made you. But, God's love does provide strength, through the mistakes and also through the victory.
It's impossible to deny your experiences and with each act of faith and trust that you find yourself led through joy and discovery, your faith grows, and in turn, so does your trust.
