Plus-Size Model Demi Rose Shuts Down Haters For Criticizing Her 'Weird' Catwalk
She's only 24 years old.
In 2019, young women — thankfully — can look up to diverse, body-positive models who have changed the way we look at sexuality, women’s bodies, and confidence. Whether it’s Ashley Graham, Tess Holliday, Valentina Sampaio, Brooks Nader, or Ali Tate Cutler, these beautiful women have been trailblazers for bringing diversity to the modeling industry one way or another.
But there’s another model whose beauty is just as breathtaking as her friendly attitude, positive body image, and, of course, flaunting the baddest, best parts of yourself.
Who is Demi Rose Mawby? Known professionally as simply Demi Rose, she's been in the news recently because haters made of her unsuual walk down a Miami runway. In true strong woman fashion, she shut down her haters after they criticized the way she strutted.
It seems like Demi Rose won't let the trolls shut her down. But what else do we know about her? Here are a few things to know about her career, how she’s faced recent tragedy, and her dating history.
1. She’s wanted to be a model since she was a kid.
According to Mawby’s website, “Since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of becoming a model. I loved being in front of the camera and striking a pose. Now, my dream is reality.”
In a piece on Women Fitness, she explained, “I never believed I could make it as a model and at the time I was training to become a beauty therapist on my third year of college. But I just knew inside something more exciting was in store for me.”
2. Demi Mawby got her start on Instagram.
Though she’s now 24, Mawby has been posting on her Instagram since she was 18. She began posting pictures of herself and body, and gained recognition for her beauty. Before Instagram, though, she was well known on MySpace. (Remember MySpace?)
For the first cover of SIXTY6 Magazine, she told the publication, “In school I was quite popular on MySpace and that kind of followed on to Instagram. It was really weird when people started recognizing me and stuff on the street. I just got used to it.”
3. She’s had an incredible modeling career.
Early in her career, Mawby signed with a modeling agency that was rumored to actually be an escort service. However, she joined Taz’s Angels, “a group of models who live together in a mansion, and are managed by a man named Taz.” Taz’s Angels is a mentorship program, but has been criticized for possible ties to escorting.
Mawby moved to the United States from the UK, but eventually left the group. However, she credits the group with building her brand. “Not an escort agency at all. We were hosting clubs and having fun. Just being popular on social media and showing people a bit of our life. We went to parties and hosted clubs, we went to America, we saw the world. It did make me more internationally known,” she said.
In an interview with The Sun from 2016, she explained how she got so popular. “I posed for selfies and pictures and it just grew from like 60,000 to 200,000 to a million to 3.2 million now,” she said. Her Instagram currently has over 10 million followers.
4. She's worked as a DJ.
Back in 2017, she told Women Fitness, “I absolutely love music. I love playing on the decks and to see the people enjoy it and enjoy their day/night. I couldn’t live without music! The DJing is a passion that I intend to continue having fun with in the future.”
She began putting music on SoundCloud in 2017 with quite an impressive number of listeners.
5. She struggled with an eating disorder.
When she was younger, Mawby suffered from low self-esteem, poor body image, and eating issues. In May 2019, Mawby told The Daily Mail about her struggle and posted a photo of her when she was just 80 pounds, vowing to never hurt herself like this again.
“I had a curvy figure at 16 and wanted to lose a load of weight so I went through a period of getting so skinny and putting myself on a strict diet. I was so unhappy and hated my body...One day I woke up and realized I had to get better for myself. I started going to the gym, eating normally, and now I’m so confident with my body,” she said.
6. Mawby puts a lot of hard work into her figure.
According to the model, she has a personal trainer, Dean DeLandro, and takes part in training programs: “I train with Dean four times or more a week for one hour each time. We usually work on my glutes, abs and conditioning my body sessions with some cardio.”
But she’s also careful about her diet, adding, “I am always very aware of what I eat and love eating healthily. I try to avoid as much carbs as I can and I never eat bread, pasta and I avoid sugar at all costs.” And, as she told The Daily Mail, “Everyone says I’m the healthiest person I know. The fattiest thing I will ever eat is nuts and peanut butter. Any bad thing I eat, my body isn’t used to it and just puts on the weight. That means no birthday cake!”
7. She recently experienced personal tragedy.
Mawby’s dad, Barrie, passed away in October 2018. Her mother, Christine, passed away just eight months later. She posted tributes to both her parents on social media, and credits her fans with supporting her emotionally.
8. She dated Tyga.
Shortly after Tyga and Kylie Jenner called it quits, Mawby began dating the rapper, but they broke up not too long afterwards. She spoke to the Daily Mail in 2017, revealing that even though she split with Tyga, they are still on good terms. And there’s no bad blood between her and Kylie; in fact, Mawby praised the self-made billionaire:
“I don’t let the negativity get to me, it never ever gets to me. I’m so happy and I get more love than I ever have online. I was quite known before I even met him. But I’m still referred to as Tyga’s ex. We still talk now and then, you know, just ‘how are you?’ and stuff... We really liked each other but logistically it didn’t work out in the end. But everything happens for a reason.”
9. She has a boyfriend.
Mawby has been dating DJ Chris Martinez since 2017. Martinez is part of the group The Martinez Brothers, alongside his real-life brother, Stevie. The group were named MixMag’s DJs of the year in 2014, performed at night clubs and for UK audiences.
10. Mawby recently let her haters have it.
And good for her! As we mentioned earlier, she walked in a Oh Polly fashion show over the summer, but the video of her “awkward” walk recently resurfaced and went viral. Now, she’s had to fight off trolls who made fun of the way she walked. She quickly shut down her haters in a series of tweets.
