Meet David Gborie — A Comedian To Watch In 2020
He's the voice of Comedy Central.
Most of us have gone our entire lives hearing about popular, hilarious and famous comedians. We’re familiar with big names like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, and Chris Rock, and though they’ve left quite a comedic indent and have shaped the way we think about humor, what about those hilarious individuals we don’t see plastered on our televisions?
Every now and then, a comedian will come out of the woodwork who changes how we feel about certain subjects. And while we may only see their stand-up, many comics are also writers, creators, and actors. With Vulture doing a round-up of comedians to watch, we thought we’d learn a little bit more about them.
Who is David Gborie? You may actually already know his voice, but here are a few things to know about him.
1. He lives in Los Angeles.
The son of a Sierra Leonean mother, Gborie lives in LA. While it’s not exactly the life for some, in an interview with What Should We Do, he was asked about his perfect day in the city.
“Walk around Highland Park, take the train to Blue Rooster Art Supplies to watch [my stand-up night] Faded, drinks at the Roost, and a nightcap at Del Taco,” he said. Now that sounds amazing.
2. He’s been in television.
Gborie was a writer and creative consultant for How To Be Broke, and acted in The Lot, Party Legends, Those Who Can’t, and Pitch Off with Doug Benson. He’s also appeared on Conan, Acting Out, Flophouse, Uproarious, and The Guest List, and in 2015, was named one of Comedy Central’s top Comics.
3. But he’s also had other pursuits.
He’s a writer in addition to appearing on television, lending his talent to Comedy Central, Fusion, and the ESPY Awards. And just when you thought he couldn’t be any talented, he also co-hosts a podcast, All Fantasy Everything, which “imagines fantasy drafts of anything in pop culture, from songs to sandwiches.” He also co-hosts another podcast, Shinin’ With Sam and Dave.
In his What Should We Do interview, when asked about his favorite word right now, as discussed on the podcast, he said, “Fiduciary. It sounds way sexier than it should, and it’s probably something I should know more about. I think it’s Latin.”
4. He’s always dreaming bigger.
While some individuals may stop when they’ve reached mild success, that’s not in the cards for Gborie. When asked if he feels like he’s made it, he responded, “That’s a dangerous question. I feel like I’ve achieved some of my goals, but there’s definitely no end point on my dreams. If you give me the moon, I gotta try for Mars.” Now, that’s inspiring for all of us.
5. He’s the new voice of Comedy Central.
Comedian Kyle Kinane was the voice of the network since 2012, lending his vocals to upcoming shows or promos. But since April 2019, the torch is passed to Gborie! Kinane posted on Instagram, congratulating Gborie on his new role.
