One woman, Taja Cone, is a real estate agent and the wife of former Yankee David Cone. She's interviewed for a spot on Real Housewives of New York four times and can't believe she hasn't been chosen yet. She told Page Six: “My life is so perfect for TV that it’s unbelievable to me that they don’t see that. And that’s the truth. I don’t think they get the Yankee logo — how important that is in New York. Are they serious?”
Cone isn't the only wannabe reality star wondering why the Housewives producers aren't calling. Recently it was reported that Tori Spelling wanted to get in on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills action. Deidre Scaramucci, the wife of former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, has also expressed her desire to be on the franchise. She's sure she's right for the show because, in her own words, "the drama follows me everywhere."
Like Taja Cone, another woman who wants to air her drama on cable television is Elizabeth Vizzone. Who is Elizabeth Vizzone?
1. Casting challenges
A casting agent who worked on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Real Housewives of New Jersey told the New York Post that it's actually quite hard to find the perfect women to cast. “There’s old money in every city and [most] people don’t want to exploit themselves. All the ‘Housewives’ are hard to cast. We are lucky if we interview six to 10 people a season. Nobody with integrity is going to go on a reality show like that where you are flaunting your lifestyle and flashing cash.”
2. What about all these women "desperate" to be on the show?
A publicist who's worked with Real Houswives of New York said that he thinks the women who are promoting themselves to be on the show "don't have a whole lot going on in the first place." He said: “They think their lives will be transformed. They think there will be an element of happiness that will result in being famous. They don’t understand that most people watch the show because they are watching trainwrecks.”
3. So, what's Elizabeth Vizzone's story?
Elizabeth Vizzone is an interior designer and home stager who lives in Montclair, New Jersey. Reportedly, she threw her proverbial hat into the ring to become the next Real Houswife after friends recommended her to producers. She said: “I actually have friends that were approached to be on the show and they were terrified to even entertain the thought. But as I told Matt [Solomon], one of the casting producers, I feel like I don’t have anything to hide.”
4. Her interview process
Vizzone had a Skype interview with a casting agent on June 21 and is waiting to hear what the next steps are. Typically, a potential Real Housewife goes through a series of interviews with producers either via Skype or on the telephone before an in person interview is set up.
5. The formula
A casting agent for the show said that the process of selecting the Real Housewives is complicated. One former Housewife who prefers to remain anonymous said when it comes to the Beverly Hills franchise, women whose star has faded are typically the type they approach — think Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna and Denise Richards — or those who have a connection to powerful men like John Mellencamp's daughter Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave. For the New York franchise, producers are more focused on someone funny. Heather Thomson, who was on RHONY from 2012 to 2015 said: "That’s the only thing they care about right now. They don’t care if [a potential Housewife] is skinny, fat, young or old — she just has to be funny. [Producers] need someone who is quick-witted and the queen of the one-liner. If you're going to keep up with Bethenny [Frankel] and Dorinda [Medley] you need to be a quick thinker."
6. Is Elizabeth the next Real Housewife of NY?
Only time will tell if Elizabeth Vizzone will be the next Real Housewife. She was born in Toronto and studied design there before moving to New York City to work with Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. People close to the production of the New York series have said that ideal new cast members at least know the show's current Housewives socially. “It works better if you have history with the other women because it makes for real, deeper drama and hurt feelings,” said a production source. “You can say, ‘Well, two years ago, this happened...' ” Vizzone knows current Housewife Ramona Singer.
7. Drama between Elizabeth and Ramona
Elizabeth Vizzone started watching Real Housewives of New York after a run-in with Ramona Singer in a restroom at the Mark Hotel. “I had an encounter with Ramona a few years ago at the restroom at the Mark Hotel, where she proceeded to argue with me over the designer of my shoes. After that, I started watching the show.”
