getty Beginning in 2019, Mick Mulvaney will serve as the president’s White House Chief of Staff, succeeding John Kelly, who resigned earlier last week and will serve out his term until the end of December.
Mulvaney is currently the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, but before this, was the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and served in the South Carolina General Assembly, the State House of Representatives and the State Senate. He also ran his family’s real estate business and practiced law.
Though he wasn’t Trump’s first pick for the position, considering all of his choices didn’t want the job, it’s been reported that back in 2016, Mulvaney was the furthest thing from a supporter. In a video from 2016, he said, “Yes, I’m supporting Donald Trump. I’m doing so as enthusiastically as I can, given the fact that I think he’s a terrible human being. Sources say the two developed a relationship on the golf course, where Mulvaney would stay in Washington on weekends to play.
As far as his political positions go, he sided mostly with his Republican colleagues while in Congress. He’s pro-life and believes life begins at conception, and was against providing federal funding to Planned Parenthood. In addition, he’s opposed to same-sex marriage and voted no on reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act in 2013. Mulvaney is also a gun rights supporter and opposes restrictions on purchasing firearms.
Aside from social issues, he also seems to defend an anti-prevention view regarding the environment and global warming. He’s supported opening the Outer Continental Shelf to oil drilling, wanted to bar the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases, and opposes green energy.
