Prior to winning his seat, he had no political experience campaigning or holding office, eventually defeating his opponent on a mostly self-financed campaign. He won with 85 percent of the vote! But before his career in politics, he was the CEO of a polyester and plastics manufacturer, making him one of many Senators with a business background.
Like his Republican colleagues, he shares many of the same viewpoints and is one of his party’s members who argued in favor of the “nuclear option” in an effort to speed up the process of the president’s nominees. But though he initially supported Trump, in July of this year, he said Trump’s trade policies are starting to do “permanent damage.”

He’s opposed to the ACA and supports free-market health care, declining to “tie funding the federal government with defunding Obamacare.” In addition to these views, he’s a gun rights supporter, and co-sponsored a bill that would have prohibited the Department of Justice from tracking the purchases of shotguns and rifles; he also voted down the Manchin-Toomey Amendment, which aimed to require background checks on commercial gun sales.
