Who Is Richard Shelby's Wife? New Details On Annette Nevin
They've been married since 1960.
Since 1970, Richard Shelby has served as a U.S. Senator from the state of Alabama. He’s currently the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and previously served as Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, as well as Senate Committee on Rules and Administration.
But before his tenure in the Senate, Shelby was a city prosecutor, U.S. Magistrate for the Northern District of Alabama, and Special Assistant Attorney General of Alabama. He’s perhaps most notable for his views, as he was once a Democrat, and switched parties during President Clinton’s first term.

1. She has multiple degrees.
Nevin has a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Alabama. She then earned her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.
2. She’s a former professor.
She taught at Georgetown University for 20 years, where she taught in the McDonough School of Business. She was the first woman to become a tenured professor, as well as the first female emerita professor.
She was also a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh and the Helsinki School of Economics. In addition to serving as a professor, she was also director of both the Georgetown graduate and undergraduate programs at Oxford University. How’s that for intelligent?
3. They’ve been married for over 50 years.
The couple wed in 1960, and have two children, Richard, Jr. and Claude. They're also grandparents, as Claude and his wife have one daughter and one son.
4. She has a building named after her.
Both she and her husband were honored when the Shelby Hall Research Center at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, was named for the couple. Nevin served as a professor emerita at the university. It’s an interdisciplinary science building, combining mathematics, chemistry and biology research.
5. She’s into fundraising.
Nevin has held fundraising events for the Lombardi Cancer Center in Washington and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She’s also worked for the March of Dimes, the Honorary Advisory Committee for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and the Honorary Advisory Board for the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
6. She’s fallen under criticism.
For six years, from 2008 to 2014, Shelby came under scrutiny after he reimbursed himself and Nevin with more than $500,000 from his campaign and PACs. He apparently hoarded the cash and didn’t share with any other colleagues.
