Who Is Bill Hader's Ex-Wife? New Details On Maggie Carey
They were married for 11 years.
We all know and love Bill Hader as the funny guy, whether it was when he acted in classic movies like Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, or Trainwreck, or when he appeared on Saturday Night Live as a main cast member. I mean, who didn’t burst into tears of laughter whenever Stefon came on the screen?
But unlike the facade Hader put on every Saturday night, he frequently suffered from anxiety and panic attacks, as well as migraines. Though he eventually felt more at ease being on live television and performing, his wife at the time stuck by his side.
Unfortunately, the two recently divorced, making us wonder, just who is Bill Hader’s ex-wife? Here are 9 things to know about Maggie Carey and her relationship with Hader.
1. She’s from Idaho.
Carey was raised in Boise, Idaho, graduating from high school in 1993. “I was in every AP class possible. I played a ton of sports. I as in student council. I was an all-American soccer player,” Carey said of being in high school.
After graduating, she attended the University of Montana and received a Bachelor’s in English literature. She also earned an MFA in film production from the University of Texas at Austin.
2. They met through a mutual friend.
Carey knew this mutual, funny friend from college, who actually ended up in Hader’s sketch group. And the funniest part? Hader’s appearance when they first met.
As Carey said, “They didn’t actually have a theater they were affiliated with — they put on shows in their friends’ backyard. In one of the sketches, Bill was wearing overalls and no shirt. I’m from Idaho, and that’s a total turn-on. After the show, I was like, ‘Who is that funny guy in the overalls?’”
3. They were married for 11 years.
The couple wed in 2006.
4. They have three daughters together.
Just three years after getting married, they welcomed their first daughter, Hannah, in 2009, followed by Harper in 2012, and Hayley in 2014. They’re really fans of “H” names, huh?
5. She was a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade.
She performed with the troupe in New York City, and was part of the Improv Olympics West in LA. Even crazier is that she met Aubrey Plaza in a UCB class, which is how she approached her about starring in her film.
6. She’s a screenwriter, producer, and director.
Though you may not recognize her face, Carey wrote and directed the 2013 film, The To Do List, which starred Aubrey Plaza and also had Hader in a small role. She also co-wrote and directed Funny or Die episodes called “Lady Refs.”
7. They were living apart for a while.
While Hader was working on Saturday Night Live, Carey was living in LA at the time. This was the reason he decided to leave SNL in 2013. In an interview, he said, “The whole reason we're moving to California is that we're tired of being apart all the time. Doing SNL was a huge time commitment. You'd have weeks off and you'd have to go to L.A. It's about rolling with the punches.”
After the birth of his first child, things became difficult, and even more so when their second daughter was born. According to Hader, “It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point. It got to a point where I said, 'Maybe it's just time to go.’”
8. The couple separated in 2017.
In November, the two announced their separation, and Hader filed for divorce in December, citing irreconcilable differences and sought joint physical and legal custody.
9. They eventually reached a divorce settlement.
In March 2018, they reached an agreement on their split. They were restored to single persons in June 2018. Though the specific details are in a separate and private filing, Hader has stated that Carey should receive spousal support.
