8 Details About Grant Gustin’s Fiancée LA Thoma And Their Secretive Relationship
She laughed when he proposed.
Over the past few years, sparks have been flying in Grant Gustin’s personal life. The 28-year-old actor, best known for his roles on The Flash and Glee, is currently engaged to his girlfriend LA Thoma.
Though they’ve only been together for about two-and-a-half years, the couple has gotten close pretty quickly and are ready to bring their relationship to the next level. Read on to find out more details about Thoma and her relationship with Gustin, including how she reacted to Gustin’s marriage proposal and how the two have gotten closer.
1. Thoma is a physical therapist.
On her Instagram bio, Thoma writes that she is a “Doctor of Physical Therapy.” She has posted plenty of videos using the hashtag “#daretobeactive.”
Gustin has said that Thoma’s physical therapy skills have come in handy for him. “She’s a physical therapist,” he told Conan O’Brien last year. “She helps me a lot.”
2. Gustin’s work schedule got in the way of his plans to propose.
Gustin’s original plan to propose to Thoma while on a movie shoot last summer was thwarted by scheduling complications and his commitment to The Flash.
“I thought I was supposed to go to Costa Rica last summer, to do a movie, and it kept getting pushed until I had to go back to Flash and I was out of the [movie],” Gustin said during an interview with Conan O’Brien. “I thought I was gonna do [the proposal] there, and I never went.”
3. The surprise of Gustin’s proposal was almost ruined.
Though Gustin had intended to surprise Thoma with his marriage proposal, a backpack the two were sharing during a workout almost spoiled the surprise.
“We worked out on the beach, I forgot the [engagement] ring was in my backpack,” Gustin told Conan O’Brien. “[When] we were sitting on the beach afterwards, I thought she saw it.”
However, it seems that any potential crisis was averted. “It turns out she hadn’t [seen the ring],” Gustin added later in the interview.
4. Thoma didn’t take Gustin’s proposal seriously at first.
Fearful that Thoma had seen the engagement ring in his bag during their joint workout, Gustin popped the question later that same day, as he explained in his interview with Conan O’Brien.
“It was such [an] impromptu proposal and random moment, she thought I was joking, actually, when I proposed,” said Gustin. “It was obviously not a very good proposal. She laughed at first,” he continued. “But then she did say yes.”
5. They revealed their engagement through a caption-less Instagram post.
In April 2017, the couple shared the news of their engagement in an Instagram post. There’s no caption, but the image features Thoma’s engagement ring front and center as the couple smiles and sits together on a beach.
6. Is Gustin married to Thoma already?
During the couple’s vacation in Malaysia late last year, rumors swirled that the two had actually gotten married in secret. Gustin was quick to dispel these rumors on Instagram, stating that the two had yet to tie the knot.
“It was incorrectly reported, without our permission that LA and I had a private wedding while we were here, but that’s not quite the truth,” Gustin wrote in an Instagram post. “While we did have a beautiful, symbolic Kadazan ceremony to honor LA’s ancestors, we still won’t tie the knot until next year.”
7. They have a house together.
Though they haven’t gotten married yet, the couple has taken serious steps in their relationship. Gustin explained the purchase, as well as how he and Thoma have grown closer, in an interview with Star2.com.
“We have already started our life together, Gustin said during the interview. “We have bought a home together, and we have fallen into the groove of things.”
8. Gustin has married before — kind of.
Though Thoma will be Gustin’s first wife, he has exchanged wedding vows with someone before. His character on The Flash, Barry Allen, married Iris West, played by Gustin’s costar Candice Patton.
“No matter how different things became or what new challenges I had to face, I always had the other thing that my life was marked by. That’s you,” Gustin’s character Barry said as the two exchanged vows. “You’ve always been there, as a friend, as a partner, as the love of my life. You’re my home, Iris, and that’s one thing that will never change.”
Will his real-life vows mirror The Flash's?
