1. She has wanted this for years.
Jazz let her fans know earlier this month that she was having gender reassignment surgery on June 26th. She said "I've been ready for this for so long." She also said it was "something I've really wanted my entire life."
2. She's really excited.
Jazz was super excited about her surgery. In a video on YouTube, the 17-year-old said: “The reason why I’m being so open and documenting my journey with this procedure is because I feel education is super important. If I put out this information for people to see, they won’t need to ask anymore questions. And also, it’s educational within the community as well,” she continued. “A lot of parents who have transgender kids are like, ‘What do I do? I don’t know much about this process.’ And seeing our show kind of helps them figure out what steps they could take to help their kids and what the journey might look like in the future.”
3. She's a role model.
In 2014, Time named Jazz one of their 25 Most Influential Teens. The following year, TLC ordered an 11-episode series called I am Jazz that focused on her life as a transgender teenager and how that affects her family. The fourth season of the show recently aired.
4. There's controversy.
Jill Duggar's husband Derick Dillard was fired from his reality show after making a series of hateful remarks about Jazz. "What an oxymoron. A 'reality' show which follows a non-reality. 'Transgender is a myth. Gender is not fluid. It's ordained by God," he originally wrote. The super -eligious man could not keep his mouth shut when reports about her gender reassignment surgery hit the media. He said: “I pity Jazz. “4 those who take advantage of him in order 2 promote their agenda, including the parents who allow these kinds of decision 2 be made by a child. It’s sad that ppl would use a juvenile this way. Again, nothing against him, just unfortunate what’s on TV these days.” Note that Dillard used the wrong pronoun to describe Jazz.
5. Will Jazz miss anything about being male?
Jazz injected some humor into the serious proceedings of her gender confirmation surgery by talking about the one thing she'd miss by having female genitalia instead of male genitalia. She said she would miss urinating standing up. “The one sad thing is — peeing stand up is so cool,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve appreciated it enough to be able pee standing up … Honestly, when you wake up in the morning and you’re lazy as hell and you’re tired, it’s the most convenient thing to do.”
