How Mentally Stable Each Of The Zodiac Signs Are
Is your sign naturally susceptible to delusions or emotional issues?
Mental health is no joke. Anyone, no matter what their zodiac sign may be or what their horoscope says, can suffer from psychological issues.
There are many different types of mental illnesses, and while most of the underlying causes aren’t understood very well, we know that they can range from childhood trauma to poorly developed coping skills to an inability to simply relate to other people. Physical problems also play a huge role — many mental issues can be traced back to something off-kilter in the physical body.
That said, some signs are thought to be more stable than others. Earth signs (Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo) tend to be well-grounded, while Fire signs (Sagittarius, Aries, and Leo) are known for problems with impulse control. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) frequently have emotional issues. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) are the “clear thinkers” of the zodiac, as they relate to the world through their intellect.
This list is only based on the Sun sign, which is just a small part of a complete chart. I’m sure we can all list people from each zodiac sign who seem to be misplaced on this list.
If you want to know more about how your astrology affects someone’s mind, look at their full chart and see where they have the most planets, what their rising sign is, and what their Moon sign is, as the Moon rules the subconscious and is often associated with insanity and other mental problems.
Not even a fully detailed natal chart can reliably predict whether someone will fall victim to their own mind, though. If you’re concerned about your mental health, don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Put down the astrology chart and go talk to a professional therapist.
Here's how mentally stable each zodiac sign is, ranked from most to least.
1. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
Serious and driven, this is the most rational of the signs. Capricorn’s nature is logical: they have a firm grasp of reality and how the world works. Capricorn might miss out on some of the fun parts of life, since they don’t usually enjoy frivolous nonsense, but that makes them the least susceptible to delusions, as well.
2. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
Scorpio may seem troubled to those around them, but this sign doesn’t care what others think. They love to be in control of any situation, and that includes their own mind. Scorpio is very familiar with their own mental processes (even if no one else is) and will choose how to define “sanity” for themselves.
3. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
Libra’s love of balance helps them to be aware of anything that’s out of whack, including their own mental and emotional energy. If they can feel that something is wrong, they may not know how to fix the problem, but they won’t hesitate to go and find someone who can help restore equilibrium.
4. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
Sure, Sagittarius may act crazy, but they’re just having fun. The Sagittarian love of truth and learning keeps their minds active and engaged, and they’re just as curious about exploring their own inner worlds as they are the outer one. Problems are meant to be examined, experimented with, and solved.
5. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
Taurus is territorial and seeks security. They can be a little paranoid when it comes to their personal space and belongings. When everything is going well, Taurus functions just fine, but if they perceive a threat (real or imagined), their insecurities can get out of control.
6. LEO (July 23 - August 22)
Many mental health issues stem from low self-esteem, so Leo’s natural self-confidence protects them from a lot of the issues that the rest of us face. However, once some trauma does manage to breach Leo’s ego, it can turn their whole world upside down.
7. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
Just because Aquarius thinks differently than everyone else doesn’t mean they’re having problems. Aquarius is a humanitarian who wants to see progress on a global scale, and knows that sometimes the only way to achieve it is to push the envelope and make people uncomfortable.
It can be hard to tell if Aquarius is on the verge of a break-through or a break-down.
8. PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
This is the sign of dreams and delusions, so why isn’t Pisces at the bottom of this list? Because Pisces is also highly attuned to their own and others’ complex emotional networks.
Left alone, they could sink into an imaginary world, but Pisces is rarely alone long enough for this to happen. They live to give and receive emotional connections and support, and this helps keep them stable.
9. ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
Aries’ fiery love of action gets things done, but it can also create inter-personal problems. Aries has a short fuse and little patience for subtleties.
They’d rather fight than work out a disagreement peacefully, and can’t help but try to smash through anything that gets in their way. Their fierce independence makes it difficult for them to ask others for help and support.
10. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
The sign of the “Twins” isn’t necessarily dealing with a multiple-personality disorder, though it often seems like it. Gemini does tend to suffer from identity issues: their ego is so flexible, they depend on others to help them know who they are, and unfortunately this always changes from one social group to the next.
11. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
Picky Virgo likes things to be “just so,” and they are particularly sensitive to chaos and disorder. Virgo excels when allowed to hyper-focus on some research and data-gathering project, but their obsessive nature makes it difficult for them to find that focus in a messy environment. On bad days, Virgo is a nervous wreck.
12. CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
Cancer’s emotions run deep, and they often have trouble understanding their feelings objectively. The problem is that Cancer loves privacy and doesn’t trust outsiders very much, so they tend to hide everything, keep it all inside, and pretend that things are just fine when they should be reaching out.
Trudi Mentior grew up in Great Falls, Montana, where she spent her formative years wondering just what might be beyond those vast plains, on the other side of those distant mountains. She now lives in Vancouver, Washington, with her husband, three cats, and a loudmouthed hyacinth macaw (who loves to scare the cats).
