10 Cringey Facts About Scott Disick's Relationship With 19-Year-Old Girlfriend Sofia Richie
Lionel's not pleased.
The relationship between Scott Disick and Sofia Richie has everything that a storybook romance needs: a handsome prince (okay, a lord in this case), disapproving parents, and obstacles that the couple must overcome. So, why does this relationship bother so many people?
They intrigue us in almost the same way that a crime scene fascinates us: you want to look away and think about anything else, but there's something that keeps your attention riveted.
When Scott and Sofia first started hanging out, there was the obligatory denial Sofia posted on Twitter. "Just so everyone can get their panties out of their asses, Scott and I are just homies #Relax," she tweeted to her followers.
Obviously, she inherited her father's way with words. "Panties out of their asses" is reminiscent of dad Lionel Richie's early lyric writing. When it appeared as if that tweet hadn't quieted the internet buzz, Sofia tweeted, "The last time I'm gonna say it. Scott and I are just friends. I'm single and focused on friends, family, and work. #againrelax."
But as it so often turns out, the lady dost protest too much, and Scott and Sofia became 'Instagram Official', which — as anyone knows — needs to be taken seriously. The problem is that while Scott and Sofia are happy, it appears as most people find the two of them dating alarming, and unsettling.
This is one coupling that no one is shipping. What is it about Scott and Sofia's relationship that people find so disturbing and mildly creepy?
1. There's a 15-year age difference.
Scott is 34 and Sofia is 19. But to be fair, their emotional ages seem much closer. Women do mature faster than men, and Sofia did grow up in the spotlight with dad, Lionel, and sis, Nicole. There may be a true connection of souls with these two, even though Sofia can't drink or rent a car.
Scott has said that Sofia is the only one who understands him. Scott has three children with ex, Kourtney Kardashian, and Lionel may have spent a lot of time on the road instead of parenting. Could Sofia have daddy issues?
2. Scott is a self-proclaimed sex addict.
While Scott did admit to being addicted to sex when Kourtney accused him of being "a f*cking whore" on the reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians, he has since recanted and says that he isn't a sex addict per se, just that he likes sex a lot as in he has a "gargantuan appetite" for it. His huge appetite for sex could make being faithful challenging for him.
3. Scott had himself knighted "Lord Disick."
What does one do when they're feeling "less than" and "insecure"? Well, if you're Scott Disick, you buy a title online and participate in a traditional knighting ceremony as part of a storyline for the reality show you're in.
Scott was literally putting on airs, which smacks of desperation and the overwhelming need to bolster his self-esteem. Did he feel the need to compete with the Kardashian dynasty?
4. Both Sofia and Scott have modeling on their resumes.
At 19, Sofia has already been featured in campaigns for some major brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, and Chanel. Scott used to model for teen romance book covers. No big whoop — not everybody has a high fashion look. Scott was also a restaurateur, but his restaurant failed.
Most of his wealth and fame seems to have come from being on Keeping up with the Kardashians. He describes himself as a businessman and entrepreneur now, and his future career plans look bright, if not vague.
"I'm sure a lot of people have no idea what it is that I do. The truth is I work in various industries," he said in an interview with Haute Living.
5. Scott's problems with drugs and alcohol may not be entirely in the past.
Scott has admitted to being addicted to alcohol, cocaine, Ativan, and Xanax. He's had multiple stints in rehab but seems to have difficulty staying clean and sober, especially when stressed. He knows that he must get control over these demons if he's going to be a good example for his kids and impress future in-laws.
6. They grew up with completely different family dynamics.
Scott grew up as an only child in a wealthy family, and while Sofia also grew up in an extremely wealthy family, she had two siblings. Scott certainly had a crash course in family life after being with Kourtney and her family.
However, birth order does have an effect on our personalities and how we relate to people. The personality traits of an only child and of the youngest of three are very different, which could prove to be challenging for the couple in the future.
7. Scott might have a shopping addiction.
Who doesn't enjoy a little retail therapy every now and then? But Scott goes on massive shopping sprees. He has an extensive collection of high-end cars, expensive watches, designer clothes, and even male-beauty products. Part of Scott's job as a public figure is to look good, but how many cars and watches does one man need?
8. Sofia's family worries Scott is a bad influence.
It seems as if everyone thinks that Scott will ultimately ruin Sofia's life. Dad Lionel Richie thinks that Scott will lead his baby girl astray.
Sofia may be young, but she does seem to have a strong sense of who she is and what she wants. She's not blind to his issues and if she's willing to ignore any red flags he may be sending up, then that's it's her decision.
9. The couple hasn't yet revealed the "status" of their relationship.
10. Scott loves to tease Sofia about getting her pregnant.
Although Scott is already a daddy to three, he allegedly loves joking with Sofia about getting her pregnant. Scott being somewhat of a prankster, he enjoys the reaction he gets from Sofia when he talks about an accident happening.
Most people don't tease their 19-year-old girlfriend about accidentally impregnating them, but Scott seems to have a bizarre sense of humor. Is pregnancy a funny joke for Scott or is he secretly hoping for child number four?
We can only speculate what exactly is going on with Scott and Sofia — are they preparing for a pregnancy, secretly engaged, or just having fun? The details on their relationship status aren't clear, but the one thing that we do know is that Scott is romancing Sofia — and she's loving it.
Whatever happens with Sofia and Scott, we should probably just take her advice and #relax. No matter how disturbing, unsettling, and alarming their relationship may appear to other people, it's their relationship, nobody else's.
