I remember when I got my first good role in a college play and was sitting in my friend’s living room when one of her friends came in, complaining that I had got the role and she hadn’t. She didn’t know I was there and was only trying to get her frustration out over not getting the role.
When she saw me sitting there, she turned bright red and started to try to explain what she meant. I quickly let her off the hook because I understood she wasn’t purposely trying to be mean, she was just jealous.
This was the first time I realized that sometimes people are just envious of you and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Envy and jealousy are very similar and are often used interchangeably. However, according to Merriam-Webster, “Jealousy is when you worry that someone will take what you have and envy is wanting what someone else has.”
With envy, you covet and can become resentful; jealousy turns you into a green-eyed monster. Both emotions vary in degrees of intenseness and both can make you do things that are out of your character.
Envy and jealousy are often strong motivators. You’re jealous that your boyfriend is getting so close to his co-worker but you’re envious of how they seem to share the same way of looking at the world.
Sometimes we are envious of the characteristics and qualities that other people have. I have a friend that never takes things personally which is a trait I wished I had, as it saves the heart from a lot of unnecessary hurts.
