Some people have the gift of bringing goodness into the world, and one of those people to me is Laverne Cox. Her bravery and dedication to enlightening people about the trans community, and her efforts to empower the trans community make her remarkable.
Here are 10 things you should know about Laverne Cox:
1. Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama, and has an identical twin brother.
2. Her brother played her as pre-transition on Orange is the New Black.
3. Cox went to the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama, where she studied creative writing before switching to dance. Her field of dance was classical ballet.
4. She changed majors again when she went to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, from dance to acting.
5. Her third-grade teacher warned her mother that her child was sick and "would end up in New Orleans wearing a dress if we don't get him into therapy right away." As an adult, in her capacity as an LGBT activist, she has lectured at many universities, including New Orleans' Tulane, where she did indeed wear a dress.
6. Cox was on the cover of the June 9, 2014, issue of Time magazine, the first out transgender person ever featured.
7. In 2014, Cox became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy in an acting category: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black.
8. In 2015, Cox posed nude for Allure magazine's annual "Nudes" issue, becoming the first openly transgender actress to do so.
9. There is a wax figure of Cox at Madame Tussauds’ wax museum.
10. She is currently starring in the movie remake of The Rocky Horror Show as Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
