Mike Tyson & Women: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
A look back at Mike Tyson's tumultuous history with women.
Not many famous men have had quite the troubled history with women that former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has. During his appearance on Friday's edition of The View, the boxer revealed, "I'm totally destitute and broke. But I have an awesome life, I have an awesome wife who cares about me...I don't deserve to have the wife that I have. I don't deserve the kids that I have, but I do, and I'm very grateful."
Here now is a brief timeline of Mike's chequered past, focusing on the women he's loved, lost and wronged.
Mid to late '80s - Mike was romantically linked to supermodels Beverly Johnson and Naomi Campbell. According to Mike's former bodyguard/chauffeur and author of The Inner Ring, Rudy Gonzalez, Mike's relationship with the latter was purely sexual. He claimed that Naomi constantly "talked down" to Mike and got him into a "designer clothes mentality." He also dated publicist/author Pam Pinnock, whose 2007 autobiography The Father Fracture details her abusive relationship with the boxer. Are Stereotypes About Black Relationships True?
1988 - Mike was fined $100 for allegedly groping and insulting reporter Sandra Miller at a nightclub. Another nightclub patron later claimed that he'd improperly touched her, too.
1988—1989 - Mike married TV actress Robin Givens in February '88. After Robin suffered a miscarriage in May '88 (of a pregnancy that Mike later claimed never existed), the marriage began to crumble. Robin was painted by Mike and perceived by much of the public as a gold digger, while she alleged that Mike was a mentally and physically abusive husband. In September of that year, Mike and Robin sat down with Barbara Walters for an infamous 20/20 interview, in which Robin stated that Mike was a "manic depressive" and described their life together as "torture, pure hell, worse than anything I could possibly imagine," while Mike looked on blankly. 1990 - Robin Givens' former assistant Phyllis Polaner sued Mike for physical and sexual assault in a case that was later settled out of court.
1991 - Natalie Fears claimed that Mike got her pregnant and slapped him with a $12 million palimony suit. However, a paternity test proved that Mike was not the father. OTC Paternity Testing
1992 - Mike was found guilty of the 1991 rape of Miss Black America contestant Desiree Washington and sentenced to six years in prison and four years probation. He was paroled in 1995. Many believe that it was Mike's belligerent attitude on the stand that brought about his conviction, and thought that Desiree was lying about the assault, especially when it was later revealed that she had brought up phony rape charges before.
1997—2003 - Mike married second wife Monica Turner in April '97. The couple had two children, Rayna and Amir. In 2002, Monica filed for divorce, citing Mike's infidelity as the reason. It's unclear with whom Mike had this affair. Around this time, Mike was rumored to be dating soap opera actress Lauren Woodland. And an unnamed woman accused Mike of raping her in November '01, but charges were dropped when investigators could not determine if the sex was consensual or forced. 2002 - Mike raised eyebrows at a pre-fight press conference when he told one female reporter, "I normally don't do interviews with women unless I fornicate with them. So, you shouldn't talk anymore. Unless you want to...you know."
2009—Present - In May '09, Mike's four-year-old daughter Exodus tragically died from injuries sustained after getting accidentally tangled in a treadmill cord. Despite reports at the time that Mike was still dating the child's mother, Sol Xochitl, he married longtime friend Lakiha Spicer two weeks later. The two have a daughter, Milan.
