When Is It The Right Time To Be Physical?

My boyfriend and I have known each other for about a year now, but have been dating for 3 months. Ive had several previous relationships but he has only had one and it was emotionally crippling and traumatic for him. In that relationship he was forced against his will to have sex. I have taken things incredibly slow for his sake, we havent done anything but kiss goodbye, hold hands and cuddle.So I guess my question is, how do I know if he/we are ready to be more physical?
