Five Americans have died while vacationing at all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. Another American was brutally beaten and left for dead. Now, another couple has come out to talk about how they got violently ill while on their vacation on the Caribbean island. Kaylynn Knull and her boyfriend Tom Schwander were guests at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana resort in June 2018. With all the news coming out about the deaths, beatings and illnesses, the couple decided it was time to tell their story in case it can help solve the mystery of what in the world is happening to Americans in the Dominican Republic. Who are Kaylynn Knull and Tom Schwander?
1. They said no to the time share
Kaylynn Knull and Tom Schwander took the time share tour while they were vacationing at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana. They returned to their room and noticed that it smelled like "somebody had dumped paint everywhere." Kaylynn aid that her eyes would not stop watering and they were drooling excessively. They asked to switch rooms.
2. It got worse
Knull said she had such severe stomach cramps that "it felt like a chainsaw going through my gut." The couple woke up that night in their new room around 4am drenched in sweat and terrified. They booked a flight home before the sun came up.
3. They were poisoned
When they got back to Colorado, they went to the doctor and they were both diagnosed with organophosphate poisoning. Organophospates are chemicals found in insecticide. The couple filed a lawsuit against the resort after it refused to tell them what chemicals are used on the greenery at the resort and also refused to refund the cost of their trip. They are seeking $1 million in damages.
4. Why they came forward
Knull told a local news station that the truth needs to be told. She said: "This sounds way too similar at the same resort." Miranda Shaup-Wener, a 41-year-old psychotherapist from Pennsylvania collapsed and died at the same resort on May 25th. Her cause of death was respiratory failure. Cynthia Day, 49, and Nathaniel Holmes, 63, checked into the same resort on the same day as Shaup-Werner. They were found dead in their room five days later with the exact same cause of death.
